NBL Peach Tree National 1999
by Jeff Dein Race was 150 motos, a bit smaller than predicted. Friday saw near perfect weather during practice followed by heavy rains at night that delayed Saturday's race until 2:00. The track was very supercross-ish with huge jumps and big downhill turns. The Pros and skilled amateurs loved it. Those who didn't learned how to deal with big lips real quick. Consensus was that the track was on par with South Park as far as difficulty. Word is that Sarasota, Florida's, track is also just as burly, so start training now folks. Leveque won Pro on Saturday with a 3-1-1 finish. Other strong rides were put in by Allier, Nelson and Romero. Travis Turreson, who recently moved to Mansfield Ohio and now rides with Billy Au, was also looking real strong. John Purse was off - first he failed to transfer out of his class semi then raced in the wrong open semi!!! He realized his mistake halfway around the track and rolled over the second turn at full speed and back up the starting hill in time for his actual semi, which he did transfer from. Allier won the open main. On Sunday it was Romero for the win in class and Allier again took open. I know Dale Holmes won Cruiser on Sunday and I think he did on Saturday as well. If not, Jamie Staff did. Andy Contes won Super on Sunday and might have stolen it at the line from Kevin Dougherty on Saturday. Todd Lyons has reclassified due to persistent writs problems but has still not fully recovered and failed to make it out of the semis. Other Super standouts were Dusty Means and Zack Roebuck. Michelle Cairns won Super Girls over Jamie Lilly by virtue of good defensive
tactics in the turns. Michelle would holeshot then Jamie would pull but
Michelle would give her some elbows and hold on for the win.
Am standouts were Scott Smith, Cimar Duarte, Mike Brandt, Matthew Fowler,
Nick Lovan...the list goes on. With the exception of 17x (Larralde, Shannahan
and Hernaez), most of the classes were won by the same guy both days. Little
Logan Collins, maybe 9 or 10 ex, was also hauling and beating big names.
As far as me, I'm well on my way to getting the East Coast Pull up to 100
percent. I won some motos on Saturday only to have Dale Holmes hang me out to
dry in the semi for no good reason. On Sunday I took a 1-7 (wreck)-3. Two of
us tied for the last transfer spot so they went to the second moto finishes
and he had bettered me - he was the guy who got up first from our first turn
pile-up (Robert DeWilde). Oh well. Main thing is that my focus and gates are
coming back. Now it's time to lay down some power in Phoenix!
