A LOT OF NEWS FROM DOWN UNDER
Double A Marketing Race Report
Wade Bootes wins Round 1 of the UCI World Ranking Series

Wade Bootes kicked off his 2003 BMX season in style this past weekend at the Nerang, Queensland UCI BMX event. This event was Round 1 for the UCI's new continent overall ranking system, where the top rider in each continent participating, will be invited to a special pre race before the UCI BMX World Championship's in August, to compete for over $10,000. With plenty of Power on the track, as well as off with his JBL Powered Bus, Wade was victorious at the UCI event, taking 1st in AA Pro.

On Sunday, it was the Gold Coast Nationals, where attendance was once again strong, with indications that the series will be hotly contested through to the World Titles in Perth. Racing in the AA Pro class was intense, with Wade once again taking home the win. Wade has indicated his intention to contest as many rounds as possible and will return at Easter to contest the Australian Indoor Nationals in Perth. Wade then can go for the UCI overall #1 Pro world Ranking by adding in the UCI BMX worlds result.

Wining both days is a great indication that Wade has been training a lot lately to take back both the AA Pro BMX title and UCI World Mountain Bike titles he held just 2 seasons ago. Round 2 of the Ranking Series will be held at Park Orchards, Victoria on January 25th, and Wade will be there.

Wade's sponsors include Trek, Volkswagen, O'Neal, ATI, AC Components, Bombshell Forks, Asterisk Knee Braces, IRC Tires, THE plates and Pads, Marwi Ti Spokes, Oakley Eyewear, ToolShed Under Garments, Vans, Azonic, WadeBootes.com, JBL, and BMXpros.com

The event was the first round of the revised UCI-BMX Ranking Series. Attendance at the Nerang ( Queensland) event was strong, with indications that the series will be hotly contested through to the World Titles in Perth in July. The event saw a number of expatriate Australians return for the summer break, including Wade Bootes, Natarsha Williams, Kamakasi and Sean Dwight. Racing in all classes was intense, and this years Ranking series concept seems to have been eagerly accepted after previously been shunned by Australian riders. Bootes & Kamakzi have both indicated their intention to contest as many rounds as possible. Both will return at Easter to contest the Australian Indoor Nationals in Perth. Round 2 of the Ranking Series will be held at Park Orchards ( Victoria) on January 25th as part of the annual Track Attack series.

The 2003 UCI-BMX World Championships will creativily adapt the Western Australian Tourism slogan to read: "The Best BMX on Earth in Perth." The 2003 Titles were officially launched at a Media Presentation at the Burswood Convention Centre, the site of the event. In the presence of the UCI-BMX Coordinator Johan Lindstrom and some 50 press and dignitaries , the new 2003 Australian Race Jersey was released and modelled by Australian Champions Tanya Bailey and Cale McCullough.

A decision by the UCI-BMX Commission to allow an increase in host country rider number will effectively see a potential 1200 Australian riders contest the World Titles. Another 800 International riders from 30 countries will attend. In addition, the Commission has allowed the use of the Indoor Titles track for the 2 day Pacific-Oceania meeting on the weekend prior to the World Titles. Many overseas and local riders will take this opportunity to get extra track time prior to official practise on the Wednesday. A number of external specialist companies have been contracted to supply Event Sports Packaging, Event Entertainment, Project Management and Merchandising. All of the supporting companies were heavily involved in the recent successful 2000 Sydney Olympics.

A new website specifically dedicated to the 2003 World Championships has been trialed and finalised, and will be released by mid January 2003.

ABA's BID TO BUY NBL REJECTED
The American Bicycle Association announced today that it's bid to purchase the National Bicycle League from USA Cycling was turned down. Clayton John, ABA President, released an official letter on the matter.

Dear BMX Community,
Regretfully, today, November 5, 2002, the sport of BMX has once again reached its biggest challenge ever. The challenge now is to continue growing the sport separately. In addition to the growth of the sport the ABA will now be focused on providing an increased level of service and support to all ABA members and all ABA tracks.

As you now know, the ABA was approached by USA Cycling, to purchase the NBL. We met every request that was made. Unfortunately others did not share the vision.

"I have long thought about what it would be like to have one sanctioning body that could promote BMX and have it attain the prominence that we all feel it deserves in the sporting world. The sheer joy of promoting an entire sport and being able to offer nationwide exposure for every member and track operator is very exciting." As we all know now, this was only a dream.

I would like to personally thank each and every person who supported this merger. I'm truly sorry we'll never know how great this could have been. As the ABA President, a former track operator and a grandfather of three BMX racers, I can tell you my passion for the sport has never been stronger. I still say it is time to set aside the differences and the individual desires and focus on what will best serve the sport, the youth and their future.

Sincerely,
Clayton John
President
American Bicycle Association

SCHWINN SIGNS TJ LAVIN, OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE
Three-time X-Games gold medallist TJ Lavin has signed with Schwinn for 2003. TJ has won everything in BMX jumping; one of the world's fastest-growing extreme sports. He was the BMX dirt championship gold medallist in ESPN's 1997, '98 and '99 X-Games. He took the prestigious King of Dirt title in 1999, and also won the gold medal at the '99 Gravity Games. It's an impressive win list, especially since the 25-year-old has only ridden pro since 1995.

"We're very excited to have TJ riding for Schwinn," said Travis Chipres, Schwinn's team director. TJ's accomplishments on and off the bike have been phenomenal, he's always pushing himself and the sport, and I have all the confidence in the world in him and his abilities. He's a great role model," added Chipres, who signed TJ to his previous sponsor six years ago and has worked with him four of the past six years.

In addition to his television appearances during the X-Games and Gravity Games broadcasts, Lavin's high-flyin' stunts have been featured on MTV's Backyard BBQ, in advertising for Ford and Mountain Dew and in video games. He starred in this year's IMAX film, "Ultimate X," and he's a frequent host on ESPN, MTV and Fox Sports Net. In his spare time, the multitalented Las Vegas native plays piano (Everything from classical to the Beatles and hip-hop) and composes music.

"BMX has given me confidence to pursue things I wouldn't have thought possible otherwise, and helped me learn more about myself," said Lavin. "I want to keep the sport of BMX dirt jumping headed in the right direction, to help it grow so more kids can enjoy the sport and everything it has to offer, and the Schwinn brand adds a lot of horsepower."

TJ Lavin adds tremendous marquee value to the venerable Schwinn brand, but more importantly, he brings valuable expertise to Schwinn's product development team. TJ's help with product design continues a company tradition of pro-level excellence that dates back to Schwinn's founding 107 years ago

EVS SPORTS INTRODUCES THE FIRST EVER DUAL WALL CARBON FIBER KNEEBRACE
After 15 years of designing, manufacturing and marketing knee braces to the extreme sports markets, EVS is proud to release the new WEB knee brace to their line up of braces. Make no more excuses; EVS Sports has the brace for you.

Function of a knee brace: deflect, divert and absorb as much possible energy that is normally placed on the leg and the knee joint during an impact or other excessive stress. Almost all knee braces currently on the market make the structural shortcoming of not addressing the need to absorb this energy. The EVS "WEB" brace is the first to do this, and thereby improving the functionality and effectiveness of knee bracing by a large degree.

A four-bar linkage hinge concept brings the ultimate in anatomical precision on tracking the hinging motion of the knee. It's sleeker than other popular braces by as much as 30%! This lets you grip the bike better, and have better feel and contact with the bike. The WEB is built for MX'ers & Extreme sports enthusiasts by true motoheads, we've thought about the details that matter, and have solutions for the common gripes about current braces.

  • Simple multi-step hyperextension stops allows for custom settings on the hinges.
  • No more shredded tank graphics and seat covers: the hinges are covered by a custom molded hinge cover protecting your bike and your riding pants from getting wrecked by the brace's hinges.
  • The WEB's the first ever truly molded carbon fiber knee brace - no bondo-type fillers used as in other braces...! Patent pending.
  • Twin-wall construction aids in energy absorption and is light weight yet extremely strong.
  • Unique suspended knee cup makes sure your knee is protected against frontal impact whether your leg is straight or bent.
  • The WEB's ultra comfortable stretch knee cup mounting system assures fit & comfort.
  • Securing the brace to the leg in comfort was a high priority. Simplicity rules, and the ComfortCuff that wraps around the calf area is the ultimate solution in keeping the WEB in place on the leg without letting it slide down nor cutting off blood circulation.
  • Removable and washable liner.
Check out evs-sports.com for more info.

ABA TO BUY THE NBL????
We heard the rumor last week and were sitting on it, wondering if we should go to print. Then we hear too many people have gotten wind of it, so we figured, what the hey. Sounds like it's not a rumor, but don't quote me on it!

The following is an e-mail we were forwarded (obviously from someone affiliated with the NBL). The name has been omitted to protect the innocent:

Okay, this is probably the biggest news that I could possibly deliver regarding the sport of BMX. The below e-mail was written by ........... I spent almost one hour on the phone last night after the state meeting learning about this from .................. In a nutshell, a number of years ago the NBL signed its life away by becoming part of an organization called USA Cycling. The intent was that the move was the first step in making BMX an olympic sport. This of course never happened. It now appears that USA Cycling has SOLD THE NBL to the ABA!

The rumored price is $3,000,000. Anyway, I have forwarded the e-mail to ................. and got a phone call from him tonight basically verifying everything that I had heard. What does it mean for us? Really dont know at this point. My gut feeling is that the ABA, at least for this year, would probably allow the "NBL Division" to continue to operate as is for the 2003 season. I believe that there is a class-action law suit already being worked on and the sale may get tied up in the courts for some time . . . .

. . . .Please take the time to read the following:

On Wednesday night, while I was with my motorcycle friends, Clayton John from the ABA called me. He told me he flew into Tampa and was on his way to Sarasota and wanted to meet with me that night. I agreed to meet with him. When he arrived in Sarasota he proceeded to tell me that the ABA bought the NBL from the USA Cycling Federation. He was sure that I already new about this as he had been working with Gerard the CEO of USA Cycling for over 4 weeks. Well, you can imagine my shock. I could not believe what I was hearing. I was afraid to say anything in fear of hurting Bob Tedesco or Erma or Dave or the office staff. Plus I just could not believe that this could have been in the works for so long without a leak. I usually get wind of rumors before they slap me in the face. I guess Clayton since that I wasn't grasping everything so he said he wanted to meet with me on Thursday. I suggested lunch time. Anyway when I got home I immediately called Bob Tedesco. I told him everything that I could remember that Clayton told me and then I asked him if it was true. He had no clue. He did not know what I was talking about. He tried to reach some people to get info on what I was telling him. He told me he was not able to find out anything but he would get right on it first thing in the morning. The next day Bob did find out that the USA Cycling Federation has been trying to negotiate a deal with the ABA. Well, I don't know where this guy Gerard thinks he can just sell us out like this. I found out that although Gerald told Clayton it was a done deal. IT IS NOT. The USA Cycling will have a meeting concerning the matter on November 6. I say Gerard will not get away with this. Many things are in the works to stop this mad man from selling us out. What I am telling you is the NBA is not just Bob Tedesco, it is each and every one of us. We are not going to go down like this. WE are the NBL and we all need to stick together. Yesterday, I had an opportunity to talk to Darol Carr about this matter. Well, he says USA Cycling cannot do this. He said we will get a class action lawsuit against USA Cycling. We could probably get enough money to either start our own sanction or buy us back from the ABA. Ever since NBL got involved in the USA Cycling I have seen our program go down hill. USA Cycling does not care about the riders in BMX. They only care about the money they get from them. I am tired of this crap and we should not take it anymore. USA Cycling might own the name NBL but they don't own us. We control our own destiny and we won't be SOLD.

STAFF WINS GATOR NATIONALS
With just two nationals left before the ABA Grands, Pro points are very important and Jamie Staff, who sat in 3rd overall in the AA points for most of the year knew that. As of one race, Jamie was pushed back to 5th overall, and he wanted nothing more than to gain back his top 3rd overall spot with a chance to go even further up with a few good results. Jamie went to Florida after a huge win at the UCI Track nationals in the team sprint, Jamie has made his schedule clear for the rest of the BMX nationals for 2002. Once in Florida, Jamie knew his training had been paying off as on Saturday, he swept the AA Pro Class in the Main events, taking home another huge win. On Sunday, it didn't look as easy for him, as he was 2nd behind Danny Nelson in the first 2 mains, but in the 3rd and most important main, Jamie holeshotted and won from start to finish, taking home the 3rd main and the overall for the day. With 2 huge AA pro wins, Jamie grabbed a ton of points, moves back into 3rd overall and now has a shot at the ABA 2002 AA Pro Title.

The American Bicycle Association has entered into an agreement with Pro-Bike-Parts to become the exclusive vendor at all ABA National events. Pro-Bike-Parts is owned and operated by ABA BMX Hall of Famer Toby Henderson. Toby has been involved with the sport of BMX since the beginning; he brings a professional vision of the sport as well as knowledge of the past.

With the decline in the vendors attending ABA national events, the ABA felt this type of arrangement was necessary to assure the ABA membership professional services at all ABA Nationals. This was a tough decision to make. Vendors like Bike Alley, Crupi, Revolution, Hurricane, and Coastal that have been regulars on the national vending scene, some for as long as 20 years will be missed. The ABA extends a most sincere Thank You for the years of support and has offered help in refocusing these businesses on vending at the local level.

Pro-Bike-Parts will bring a NASCAR or SUPERCROSS feel to all ABA National events. The set up will be truly impressive to everyone attending. Toby has configured his 3000 square foot BMX Superstore to include dressing rooms, dust free inventory storage, and a professional mechanic area to service every need. Toby is dedicated to offering every BMX product made, providing that the manufacturer is supporting the sport in some way.

This arrangement will allow for better service and support of ABA members attending National events. Vending exclusivity on the National circuit translates into stronger buying power for Pro-Bike-Parts and better savings for the ABA membership. Toby is dedicated to the growth of the sport and expects the same from the manufacturers represented in his store. This understanding of mutual promotion between the manufacturers and Pro-Bike-Parts will equate to more Factory Teams, and factory-sponsored pros, and more manufacturer displays at ABA National events.

JAMIE STAFF WINS UCI WORLD TEAM SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIPS!!
Jamie Staff lead the Great Britain Track Team to a Gold Medal at the Team Sprint World Championships!
Last weekend, while attending the ABA Gold Cup Championships in Nebraska, The UCI Track World Championships were the furthest thing from his mind. But as Jamie was crowned ABA Gold Cup Champion, he dreamed of stepping atop the Podium at the UCI Track World Championships, and his dream just came true. In just his first year of World Cup level Track cycling, Jamie Staff has shown the track world just what BMX riders are made of, as he lead his Great Britain Sprint Team to the World Championships this past Friday at the UCI Track World Championships.

Staff, has proved himself to the track community with medal's at this summers commonwealth games, showed his strength and fast learning curve in qualifying this past week. Jamie first opened up all eyes, as he was the fastest qualifier in the Men's Individual Sprint race, where he would go onto be knocked out by the eventual Bronze medalist. Jamie Also competed in the Kilo, an individual time trial for a 1 k race. Jamie once again was very impressive with a 5th overall finish at the Worlds.

Men's Team Sprint
Having been beaten by Australia at the Commonwealth Games last month (admittedly as two separate teams), Great Britain gained some revenge in the Team Sprint by winning the World Title against the Aussies. The British team of Jamie Staff, Chris Hoy and Craig Maclean had qualified fastest in the morning in a time of 44.813, better than Germany, France and Australia. However the Australians improved in the first round, beating Spain in a time of 44.779, earning them a place in the final against Britain, who were still the hot favorites with 44.575. However the Australians couldn't match the Brits in the final. They were down 0.4 seconds after the first lap, and Dajka and Bayley tried in vain to close the gap but could only come within 0.15 seconds of Britain's excellent time of 44.370 seconds. Jamie Staff, who last week was the winner of a BMX AA Pro event, The ABA Gold Cup Championships, was one of the most impressive racers to attend the Worlds, regarding that this is his first year of track racing!

Jamie puts another great mark on a great cycling season, with medaling at the Commnwealth Games, Medaling at A UCI Track World Cup, making the finials of the X-Games BMX Downhill event, Sitting in 3rd overall in the ABA Pro Points standings, and Being crowned ABA Gold Cup Champion. J

aime's BMX Sponsors include Haro, Adidas, No Fear, Lee Pipes, O'Neal Helmets, Tangent, AC Components, Smith Eye Wear, Champion Nutrition, Answer Forks, Shimano, Powerbar, Kicker, Bob's Stores, BMXpros.com, Headlock, and Double A Marketing.

GREG ROMERO TO HOST 4-MAN PRO-ONLY RACE AT TULSA, OK

Attention Professional BMXer,
I am doing a 4-Man Pro race at my compound during the ABA grands weekend. It will be on Friday during their ROC pre-race; during the day between 11am-3pm at the latest, so if you want to race the Friday night "Pro Spectacular" for $800.00 you can still do that (remember, the amateurs got all the hype). There will be a minimum $5000 pro purse. Iam working on getting a budget together and if I can get more money, that would mean a larger and deeper payout.

For those of you that don't know what the payout would be, it goes as follows:

  • 1st $1200
  • 2nd $1000
  • 3rd $750
  • 4th $500
  • 5th $450
  • 6th $400
  • 7th $375
  • 8th $325
  • Totaling $5000.00

There will be no entry fee and the race is open to all pro's. The last rodeo race I was at, I got 3rd in AA, and it paid $300.00 You make top 8, you beat that. You won't have to beat a guy who looks like he should compete in a body building show to make $300! The format will be 4 man motos taking the top 2 to the next round. If you make it all the way to a final (there will be a consi final) at the most you will run 4 laps. The course was built by Billy Au and we plan on remodeling it for the race. it is no longer than 800ft. and no shorter than 700ft. It is constructed out of red clay and features 3 turns with technical jumps. It will be fun and won't take much of your energy to participate. There will be magazine coverage from Transworld, Moto mag, BMX Plus!, Websites,etc...so you can justify supporting it with your respective sponsors. I am also planning on getting trophy girls for the podium shots. (but that is still in the works). Their will be catered food, drinks and amenities. My property has 3 acres and we have plenty of space if you need it.

I am not asking for donations, donations will be appreciated (Jason Richardson has pledged $1000!) however, I would really like you guys to participate not only for the money, but for the respect for yourselves and the sacrifices we make to compete in rodeo races where there is no valuable Magazine coverage. I know you guys are tired of hearing me complain, and complaining is very selfish, so I am taking action like McGoo, Huffman and Purse respectively. ESPN spent $750,000.00 on the production for our Downhill BMX event! Didn't charge us entry fees and everyone that participated walked away with $500.00 minimum. The Purse was worth $50,000! McGoo and ESPN are acknowledging that we are the best in the world at what we do, but more importantly, they believe in us and believe that BMX racing is rad. The existing sanctions have over 50 years total experience and they haven't progressed at the rate that downhill has in the last 3 years. Iam not trying to reinvent the sport or put on a downhill series, I just want us to take back OUR SPORT!

....And in return, make something better for the next generations. I want to support you guys! We wouldn't race if we didn't have each other. Will you support me?

More Importantly, WILL YOU SUPPORT YOURSELVES?

Email me back and tell me what you think and if you want to participate.

A-Vert-Ing Skateboarding Injuries -- Oxford Health Plans Launches Skate-Safe Program

TRUMBULL, CONN. (AUGUST 27, 2002) – Oxford Health Plans, Inc. (NYSE:OHP) announced today that it will host a series of free safe-skate programs called Lid-Zone throughout the tri-state area in mid-September. Working with Octagon, the creators of the Gravity Games, Oxford created this grassroots actions sports festival to not only encourage young people to stay active but to promote the use of protective gear and safe skating practices among children ages 10-18. Skateboarding champion Andy MacDonald and other top U.S. action sports athletes will perform at each event.

“While roller sports, such as skateboarding and in-line skating, provide excellent sources of exercise and recreation for millions of young people, it is important to emphasize that these sports can be dangerous if the proper safety precautions are not taken,” said Alan M. Muney, M.D., chief medical officer at Oxford. “Wearing the appropriate safety gear and using proper skating techniques can prevent serious injuries. Having Andy and the other top-notch skaters talk about safe skating gives our message the needed ‘star appeal’ to truly influence young people. ”

More than 26 million Americans – most under the age 25 – enjoy skateboarding and in-line skating. Each year, more than 100,000 skaters are seriously injured enough to need medical care in hospital emergency rooms, doctors' offices, clinics and outpatient centers. Most of these injuries can be prevented with education and increased safety awareness.

Each Lid-Zone event will feature skills and tricks demonstrations and contests, music, food, prizes and protective gear safety clinics. Oxford anticipates that thousands of people aged 10-18 from throughout the New York metropolitan area will attend one of the four Lid-Zone events. In addition, Oxford anticipates that thousands of others will visit the Lid-Zone web site for skateboard safety tips.

Lid-Zone events will be held:

  • Saturday, September 14, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., RexPlex Skate Park, 1001, Ikea Drive, Elizabeth, N.J.
  • Sunday, September 15, Session 1: 10 a.m. - 1:45 p.m., Session 2: 2:15 p.m. - 6 p.m., GAPS Skate Park, 20 Furniture Row, Milford, Conn.
  • Saturday, September 21, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Rampage Skate Park, 80 Comsequogue Road, East Setauket, N.Y.
  • Sunday, September 22, Session 1: 10 a.m. - 1:45 p.m., Session 2: 2:15 p.m. - 6 p.m., Riverside Park, 108 Street, New York, N.Y.

REDLINE NEWS

BUBBA MAKES THE BOLD BRONZE MOVE:
X-GAMES "BMX DOWNHILL" - AIRS THIS WEEKEND

Camp Woodward, PA: One week before all the fun begins in Philly, the BMX Downhill race for the X-Games was held on the steep hillsides of Camp Woodward. And Redline’s rookie pro, fresh off his 17th birthday, was haulin’ buns on the highspeed, monsterous-jump infested course. While the end result might not be the best, Bubba’s performance in the main was more than spectacular!

With TV cameras for ESPN and ABC Wide World o’ Sports everywhere you look, the second year of the BMX Downhill category in X-Games history, once again took place in Woodward and was all set to top the previous year.

On Saturday, the time-trials kicked off, and out of 36 pros, rookie pro BUBBA HARRIS came out the 5th fastest. For a short while, he held the 2nd fastest time, before being passed by Robbie Miranda, Justin Loffredo and Travis Turreson. Still—5th fastest was a good start, as the fastest riders would have the best lane choices throughout they day.

By Sunday, the intensity level on the World’s gnarliest BMX course was getting higher each minute. After qualifying rounds came the quarter mains. Bubba was winning his 1/4 main, until Giant’s Robert DeWilde pushed him up in a turn. Bubba recovered and still held on for 2nd place, to move on.

In the semi’s, he was squeezed out of the gate and stuck back in 7th place. Hitting mach speeds and flying for yards, Bubba had passed just enough riders by the bottom of the hill to nab the 4th place transfer spot.

Now, it was time for the big show. The 8-man final, for the big bucks, TV fame and the three types of prestigeous X-Games metal.

From what we’ve been told, all eyes were on 2 people for the main event. Sure, it could go to any of these 8 guys. But the odds-on-favorite was reigning ruler of the downhill events; Robbie Miranda (check out www.rm59.com). But the underdog, most likely-to-beat RM, was our very own 17 year old rookie sensation—Bubba Harris.

With 3 of the faster time-trialers out of the main, Bubba had 2nd lane choice to Miranda. And on these types of courses, lane choice plays a HUGE part of dangling gold around your neck or walking away looking forward to redemption in 365 days.

The gate dropped and so did the eight fastest Pros in BMX; dropping off straight down, immediately out of the gate (see BMXmania.com for pictures!). Also dropping in to the gnarliest BMX track they’ve ever set tire on. In to the first turn, it was Miranda, Staff and Harris. The crowd was going nuts!

Entering turn two, Bubba decided to make his move to the inside, to pass Staff and then Miranda. Unfortunately, he couldn’t hold the move, and with Jamie Staff right there, the two both went down in a pile of smoke and flames. (Well, not literally, but close.)

Our Redline signature boy got back up to finish for 7th place overall. Although disapointed, he was still stoked.

Talking about the attempted pass afterwards, Harris admitted, "I could’ve stayed in for a medal, but I wanted the win."

No one ever remembers who took silver and bronze, right?!

From the sounds of it, the X-Games coverage of the BMX event will be the Bubba and Miranda show. So mark your calendar for this weekend, or set those VCR’s... The BMX event / X-Games coverage will begin this Saturday on ABC’s WIDE WORLD of SPORTS, from 4 to 6, and then twice on Sunday - 1 to 3 and 7 to 9 (all times Eastern Standard Time — figure it out, west coasters; school’s about to start back up).

Be sure to check it out — even though you now know the ending, it’s bound to be an incredible show to watch! And there should be some excellent coverage for REDLINE and for the sport’s newest mega-star; BUBBA HARRIS.

Gold -Robbie Miranda
Silver -Kyle Bennett
Bronze-Robert DeWilde
4th-Wade Bootes
5th-Matt Pohlkamp
6th-Jamie Staff
7th-Bubba Harris (REDLINE)
8th-Randy StumpfhauseR

ABC Airdates - this weekend:
THIS SATURDAY - on ABC, 4 to 6pm EST
THIS SUNDAY - on ABC, 1 to 3pm, and 7 to 9pm EST

KAMAKAZI WINS AGAIN IN MINNESOTA
St.Michaels, MN: Last year at this very race, the kooky Pro with a cowboy hat--KAMAKAZI, shocked the BMX world by winning AA-pro on Sunday; after only being in the States for a month. It was the quickest any foreign pro had ever set foot on American soil and won AA-pro. So, there was no questioning why Kamakazi wanted to head up to the Land o' Lakes nationals this past weekend. It was his race last year, and he hoped to do the same this time. With 36 of the "invited" pros in Woodward, flying down the mountainside and mach-10, Minnesota could be dubbed as the "non-invited AA-pros." Along with 'Kazi, other pros showing up were DALE HOLMES, CHRIS HAM, RENATO SILVA and CHAD STREET - among others. Aboard a brand psanking new yellow 2003 Proline cruiser (that he'd abducted from the Redline trailer after getting his old 24" stolen in Brazil), Kama' dominated the Land o' Lakes national all weekend long. Beginning with pre-race, he started the weekend off right by winning the "King of Friday Night" title ... something normally reserved for struggling AA's.

On Saturday, Kamakazi was rippin' up the Minnesota terrain and scored a 2-1-1 in the three main events to take the overall victory! Chalk down Kamakazi's first U.S. win of 2003. Later that evening, the Weather Channel announced that the drought is officially over! If that wasn't sweet enough, he back it up with a Pro Cruiser win -- giving him his first ever ABA Pro "double."

On day two, it looked as though it'd be Kamakazi's day again; but a 1-3-3 in the main wasn't quite enough to hold off the UK's Dale Holmes. Kama would have to settle for 2nd place money; but came back with a vengeance to win Pro Cruiser for the second day in a row! Rumor had it that he looked like a fireball aboard the bright yellow Proline 24.

We knew he had it in him -- which is why he's here for the year. Kamakazi's weekend tally was 5 mains total - with four 1st's & one 2nd. With the confidence from Minnesota, expect to see Kazi' put on a that late-year charge for ABA's No.1 pro titles. There's still plenty of time left for the krazed Australian.

X GAMES VIII TO INCLUDE NEW WOMEN’S EXHIBITION EVENTS IN SKATEBOARD AND MOTO X
Freestyle Moto X, Skateboard Vert and Skateboard Park Will Feature Top Female Professional Athletes August 16 and 17 In Philadelphia

X Games VIII, the world’s premier action sports event, will introduce three new exhibition events to its schedule: women’s Skateboard Vert and Park and women’s Moto X Freestyle. The women’s Moto X Freestyle demo will be held on Friday, August 16 and Skateboard Park and Vert demos will be featured on Saturday, August 17. In addition to the exhibitions, the eighth annual free-to-the-public action sports competition scheduled for August 15-19 in Philadelphia will feature more than 300 of the world’s best male and female athletes competing in Aggressive In-line Skate, Bike Stunt, Downhill BMX, Moto X, Skateboard, Speed Climb and Wakeboard.

All three exhibitions will be held in a jam format style, where participants have the opportunity to showcase their athleticism in a non-competitive setting. All women participating are professionals within their respective sports.

In every X Games since the first event in 1995, there have been several women’s competitions. At X Games VIII, women will compete in separate Aggressive In-line Skate, Wakeboard and Speed Climbing events.

"Over the past eight years, the X Games and Winter X Games have showcased the athletic talents of many premier female athletes - from climber Katie Brown to skater Fabiola da Silva to snowboarders Tara Dakides and Kelly Clark,” said Chris Stiepock, X Games General Manager.

“As the leader in the action sports genre, we have a responsibility to monitor the trends and growth patterns of all the sports and disciplines in the X Games. We feel that the time is right to showcase women’s Skateboarding and Motocross as exhibitions at the X Games. In the future we’ll look to expand and foster continued growth in women’s disciplines, which will assist in the development of these sports, and in turn will help our X Games franchise to grow.”

“While all X Games competitions have always been open events, the introduction of these exhibitions will provide the opportunity to showcase the best women in sports that don’t have separate X Games competitions. We hope to foster continued growth, resulting in the emergence of new stars in future X Games events.”

Freestyle Moto X Friday, August 16, 11:30 a.m.
The women’s Freestyle Moto X exhibition, located on the Freestyle Course outside the First Union Center, will feature riders Joey Sisco (Huntington Beach, Calif.) Double A Marketing BMX Race Report: ABA Lone Star Nationals, Humble, Texas

The ABA rolled into Humble, Texas for round #19 of the 2002 Pro Season. With riders just returning from Brazil and the ABA World Championships, it was a short week of rest fro many of the AA Pro. Randy Stumpfhauser, the new 2002 UCI World Champion was looking to add to his ABA scores, as he has been concentrating on mostly NBL this season, where he sits 2nd overall in the points. Warwick Stevenson has been hot in the ABA, and currently has a huge 1000 point lead over the 2nd place rider. Either way, the Double A Marketing riders were on in Humble. Double A Marketing MTB Race Report: Norba National Series #4 Durango, CO

The 2002 Norba series is approaching its end with just one race remaining, but so far its been a great season for Wade Bootes. Already winning the 2002 Norba Dual Slalom title, back in May at the one race championship, Wade has looked strong ever since and has been very consistent. With just returning from Brazil from the BMX world Championships, where he placed 3rd and grabbed a bronze medal, Wade makes the bike transition look easy. Friday night a the Qualifiers, Wade looked back at home on his mountain bike as he was the 4th fastest qualifier for the night. The times of the top 4 riders were all with in .100th of a second, so it was going to be a tight battle to make the finals. Once Saturday night rolled around, Wade felt strong and his powerful gate start and first straitaway brought him heat wins in each race he was in until the finals.

The Final four riders, Wade Bootes, Eric Carter, Brian Schmith and Rich Houseman loaded into the gate, each being capable to win. As the gate randomly falls in Mountain cross racing, Wade was off guard for just a split second, but just like in BMX, that split second makes a world of difference as he now found himself in 2nd, behind Carter. Wade rode a strong lap, but was unable to catch 1st place. 2nd in the final though was a great accomplishment and more importantly moved him in 2nd overall in the series title chase, with just one race remaining in 2 weeks in Vermont.

Wades now on his way back to his roots this week, getting ready to do the biggest BMX race of 2002, the X-Games BMX Downhill event next weekend in Woodward, PA. If Wade can bring his MTB skills to the X-Games course and his BMX speed, we may be looking at another title to be added to his list of accomplishments after next weekend! Wade's Sponsors include Trek, Volkswagen, O'Neal, Oakley, AC Components, Vans Shoes, Bombshell, IRC Tires, THE numberplates and Pads, ATI, Marwi Ti Spokes, Powerbar, Head Lock, Double A Marketing, Toolshed, BMXpros.com, WadeBootes.com, and Champion Nutrition.

Simon Tabron Takes First Place in the Gravity Games Bike Vert Competition
Simon Tabron took home the gold medal , shortly after making a pact with himself that this was the last night he was going to attempt his signature trick “The 900.” “That trick makes it or breaks it for me. If I don’t land it, I break my ankle every time,” said Tibron. Luckily for Tabron he is still in one piece, and barely breathing. “I can’t even find the words right now, I am so happy,” Tibron said.

The UCI Worlds continued on Sunday with the elite men's race, and it was to be one of the best World Championships in recent memory. An estimated 10,000 screaming fans were reported to be on hand to watch the 2002 World Championship and see the pros do their stuff. With an awesome track and great pool of talent, Wade Bootes and Randy Stumpfhauser made there way into the main event, after a lot of tough racing. Wade, who has been concentrating on his Mountain bike racing all summer, surprised many with his fast turnaround time of getting ready on his BMX bike, as he was one of the dominate riders at the event. Randy had already captured the attention of all in attendance with his huge win on Friday nights cruiser World Championship title, so the chance of a rider to double up with World Championships at the event made people buzz.

As the riders lined up for the main event, the tension was high, but Randy and Wade were ready. The gate fell and team USA's Kyle Bennett had the holeshot, with Randy and Wade in tow. The 3 riders looked as if they were attached as they entered the first turn, but Kyle had a slight advantage over the others. It seemed like they all rode the exact same speed the entire course, and at the finish, the result was the same. Bennett first, Stumpfhauser 2nd and Bootes 3rd. For Randy, it made for yet again one of the best weekends of his BMX career, with a 1st and 2nd at the World Championships, and Wade once again reminded us of how great of a bike rider that he is any sport he rides. Both riders stood atop the award podium, proud with the days results. Randy now is getting ready to go for his first NBL #1 AA Pro title, to go with his 2001 NBL #1 Cruiser Pro title, as he goes into he NBL Grands in a close battle for the title. Wade Heads off to Durango, CO this weekend for round #45 of the Norba Schedule, and both riders will be competing in next months X-Games BMX downhill event.

Where has Dope BMX Products been all year? Mike Antes, the owner of Dope, has been seriously ill for the better half of the year. Mike was diagnosed that he may have colon cancer and therefore hasn't been able to do what he loves ... ride his bike and see all of the great friends in BMX. Antes went under the knife to have some very large tumors removed this past week and is now at home healing and resting. Mike says that Dope is still going strong and you can expect some very big things from them shortly. Just how shortly you ask? Check back next week!!! Here's a hint, ABA Worlds Ontario, CA are also next week. Hmm... Dope is proud to sponsor the following riders: ABA #1 Pro Warwick Stevenson, ABA #1 Girl Pro Alice Jung, AA Pro John Smart, AA Pro Mike Gul, Team Redman/Yamaha Waverunner

Very happy to report that Nirve's Stephen Murray rode brilliantly in Hastings, UK over the weekend and gathered up a dirt jump victory in the hotly contested Backyard Jam. Perhaps just as cool was Stephen's 6th place in street (which he's starting dabbling in more and more). Stephen's currently back in the US where he'll be filming this week with Gillette World Sport, a London-based weekly TV show that boasts a broadcast range of 200 countries and 400 million viewers. The show features a special segment called "Sporting Superstars" which will highlight Stephen in his Southern California setting. From there he's off to the NBC Gravity Games. On Monday, Nirve teammates Kyle Bennett & Cristian Becerine leave for the UCI BMX World Championships in Brazil. Racing begins at the end of next week.
Team ONE Bicycles EUROPEAN CHAMPION Round 9 and 10 of the European Championship turned out to be awesome for ONE Bicycles. Arturs Matisons (ONE) was already sure of his title in Junior Men. He won 7 out of 10 races. In cruiser he was leading until he hit a jump and moved his handlebar....this was making it almost impossible to finish, but he managed to grab 2nd place in Junior curiser. Dennis Wissink (Schijf / ONE) just recovered from a dislocated shoulder, did what he did last year .He took the title in Elite cruiser. On saturday he crashed and dislocated his shoulder again. Jana Horakova (ONE) was doing very well all year in her first year in Elite women. She won saturdays race and took a 2nd on sunday. Aivars Buris (ONE) took a 2nd place in Elite Men on saterday, but couldn't make the main event on sunday. The title for trade teams went to ONE Bicycles. Their riders had an incredible weekend, but did very well all year. They will be present at the worlds in Brasil.
