. . . Go Back to Press Releases (06.12.01) On Saturday, June 9th, The 2001 Tissot-UCI World Cup series opened with a bang at the much anticipated event in Maribor, Slovenia. One of the best stops of the 2000 UCI World Cup Schedule, Maribor opened it's arms again to racers, and built one of the best courses of the season! The course, located in a ski resort on the mountain Pohorje in the suburbs of Maribor, is Slovenia's second largest city with a population of 150,000. The Dual event yet again provided an excellent course with mixed terrain, and a Huge turnout of very welcoming people. The UCI format is a bit different from NORBA style racing, as it has 2 riders down one course, with a one run format. Having a fast qualifying time is much more important, as the rider with the fastest time usually gets a better lane choice and a slight advantage during the race. Wade qualified 5th on a course suited for more of the Downhill type rider. Wade has not had much practice with a steep downhill course, but got some great training in this weekend to help him out in the near future. Wade commented "The course was tight and you had to be on the brakes a lot, it was suited more for a down hiller but the start was totally for Brian and I." Qualifying 5th meant Wade would have a seemingly tough battle to get into the finals, but he made a fast path to the round of 8. Wade Stated "In my first round, I went up against and beat the Japanese Global rider. On to the 2nd round I met up with and then beat Mike king-Haro bikes. Mike is always a tough competitor. Then in the round of 8, I went up against Schwinn's Michael Deldycke." This is where Wade ran into a slight problem. " I unclipped out of the gate and could not get back in. Going into the second corner, I went to go to the longer, faster berm and Deldycke went the tight, shorter way, I was still not clipped in and I was going to go by him and I think he brake checked me a little as I ended up clipping his back tire, and started to slide out, and crash." Wade wound up finishing 7th overall, and looks to next weeks World Cup race in France to once again stand atop the podium as he did last weekend in Snow Summit, CA and in almost every race in 2000, Wade's sponsors include Trek, Volkswagen, Powerbar, JBL, Rock Shox, Shimano, Azonic, THE, Oakley, Vans, O'Neal, CTI 2, Marwi Spokes, ATI Grips, tool shed, BMXpros.com, Fox racing Shox, Selle San Marco, E-Caps, Sockguy, Revenge/Champion Nutrition, Bontrager, Nike, DeMarchi, IRC, Pedro’s, IMBA, Wrench Force, www.wadebootes.com, Toolshed, and King Cage.
