The Mountain Dew National Championships of BMX opened Thursday and the recently turbulent Salt Lake City weather cooperated to provide a beautiful backdrop for some amazing performances in the Vert Competition. Dave Mirra took top honors and $7,500 as he wowed the crowd with a 99.5 score. Rounding out the top three were Dennis McCoy and John Parker.

The riders took to the street, literally, on Friday as the Vans Triple Crown Series event continued under bright blue skies and snow-capped peaks for the Street Competition. Ryan Nyquist captured the Street title with a nearly flawless run edging out Thursday's Vert champ, Dave Mirra, for the $7,500 top prize. Aussie Colin MacKay took third.

Vans Triple Crown of BMX action concluded on Saturday with competitors trying to tame a gnarly Dirt course designed by Tim "Fuzzy" Hall. Nyquist continued his winning ways as he edged out local Mike Aitken and Cory Nastazio who finished second and third, respectively.

Fans who could not catch the action in person can see highlights from Salt Lake City as the event will also be broadcast on NBC Sports on August 4 at 3:00 p.m. EST as part of NBC's ongoing coverage of the Vans Triple Crown Series. Fox Sports Net will provide the cable complement.

STREET
The who's who of BMX riders in Salt Lake City for the Mountain Dew National Championships of BMX took to the street, literally, on Friday as the Vans Triple Crown event continued under bright blue skies and snow-capped peaks for the Street Competition.

Ryan Nyquist captured the Street title with a nearly flawless run edging out yesteday's Vert champ, Dave Mirra, for the $7,500 top prize. Aussie Colin MacKay took third. Check back for results from Saturday's Dirt competition as Cory Nastazio, Fuzzy Hall and the rest on hand look to close out the event with a win.

VERT
Dave Mirra, the legend, Bicycle Stunt's version of Tony Hawk, took the Vert Championship at the Vans Triple Crown of BMX at Salt Lake City on Thursday.

Fresh in from a contest at Hermosa Beach in California, Mirra stomped on the competition with a score of 99.00 on his first run. The Greenville, North Carolina resident went into the second run of the final leading BMX veteran Dennis McCoy (97.25) and Arizona's John Parker (96.50). Neither McCoy or Parker could better their scores on their second runs leaving Mirra as the Mountain Dew National Champion in Vert. In typical Mirra style, he went ahead with a second run for the benefit of the crowd?..and probably to get some more practice in.

After stringing together trick-after-trick-after-trick, Mirra bettered his previous score by posting a staggering 99.50 on his second run.

"Well I was about to walk off and stay healthy for street, then I thought this is for myself and the fans." Said Mirra about his second run. " I just learned opposite flares at home and I though Man this is the perfect contest. I want to do opposite flare and I did that, and an Indian Whip and I am really happy about that, so I was psyched to just get out and clean up a couple of things I have been working on."

A very healthy Dave Mirra and others will compete in Street tomorrow at Rad Canyon BMX Park in Salt Lake City. Dirt takes place on Saturday.
