Re: Interference by UCI (United Cycling International)

The American Bicycle Association (hereafter ABA) has taken the following steps to insure your rights as a BMXer, ABA Member or U.S. citizen are not compromised.

1. The ABA has immediately employed its attorneys to investigate the impropriety which the ABA believes is presently being visited upon its members with regard to the recent notification by the UCI that it intends to ban/fine (or both) riders who participate in the upcoming ABA World Championship with regard to their participation in the UCI World Championship to be held one week later.

2. Our attorneys have preliminarily advised that they believe such conduct may not only violate the Freedom of Association Clause of the United States Constitution, but such conduct may constitute unfair trade practices, violations in restraint of trade, and could even potentially subject UCI to liability for intentional interference with legitimate contractual relationships and prospective business advantages of the ABA, as well as other groups.

3. It is the ABA's intention to have its attorneys issue an appropriate cease and desist letter to the representatives of the UCI in the next few days. Failing in that effort at obtaining relief, the ABA attends to pursue any and all further legal remedies available to it to see that none of its membership is adversely impacted by what it perceives to be clearly unlawful and perhaps even unconstitutional conduct on the part of the UCI.

"It is extremely unfortunate in a sport in which competition of the highest quality should be the goal that one international sanctioning body is trying to stifle competition."
-Clayton John, President American Bicycle Association
