. . . Go Back to Press Releases (08.27.01) The third and final stop of the 2001 Vans Triple Crown of BMX, the Vans Championships, makes it way to the coast, taking place in Oceanside, CA. The Vans Championships prove to be a great event, being held concurrently with the Xbox World Championships of Skateboarding. The 2001 VTC of BMX, with it's new Street, Dirt and Vert format, got off to a strong start in the shadows of the Wasatch Mountains. The Mountain Dew National Championships rolled into Salt Lake City, and did not fail to entertain. Dave Mirra edged out perennial favorite Dennis McCoy and John Parker to take the Vert title, while Ryan Nyquist was busy with his own work. Nyquist notched the rare "two-fer", taking first in both the Street and Dirt competitions. Dave Mirra and Colin Mackay gave him a run on the street, while Mike Aitken and Cory Nastazio finished second and third in the Dirt. Stop #2 made it's way to the banks of the Ohio River, calling Louisville, Kentucky home. Ryan Nyquist repeated half of his performance from Salt Lake City, taking top honors in the Dirt contest. Cory Nastazio backed up his third in Salt Lake City with a second place finish, and Stephen Murray rounded out the top three. In the Vert and Street competitions, it was Dave Mirra who pulled the"two-fer", taking the top spot in both. Kevin Robinson and Dennis McCoy finished second and third on the Vert ramp, with Alistair Whitton and Colin Mackay completing the podium in the street contest.
