. . . Go Back to Press Releases (08.31.01) CHRIS HAM: REDLINE CO-SPO PRO MESSES WITH TEXAS DeSoto, Texas. The TEXAS STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS were held this past weekend under the infamous million-dollar DeSoto Indoor. And with the exception of one or two Texan Pros, practically every big-namer was there. Like all things Texan, it was a BIG race. With $500 on the line for the win, the main event lined up with Texas' Fastest: TIM KNIEP, STEVE VELTMAN, BEAU RICHARDS, A.J.ZABNOJNIK, CHAD STREET (ActionBikes/Redline), JUSTIN WHEAT, Aussie/Texas-transplant SEAN DWIGHT and Redline's CHRIS HAM. Goin' for three mains, the Texas pros put on quite a show, with more pile-ups than you'd find on I-10. Going in to the third main, HAM was tied with STREET with a whopping 9 points. And a win in the Final main of the day gave him the overall victory. What's gotten in to CHRIS HAM this year?! The guy has really been traning hard and its paying off bigtime. KAMAKAZI tweaks his
ankle When you last heard from the Redline-Australia pro, he'd taken 2nds both days in ProCruiser at the Great Northwest National, and tossed his gear in the SuperCamp boxtruck to go with Bubba 'n the gang to do a 3-day BMX Clinic in Nanaimo, British Columbia. Once in Canada, the Nanaimo BMX track provided an awesome course for teachin' the kids some BMX skills. Their second straight is looooooong, and chock full o' jumps -- a roller, a mid-size double, a big step-up, followed closely by a huge tabletop, and then some giant triples. So -- on the first day of SuperCamp, Kamakazi (living up to his name and reputation) decided to be the first guy to ever jump from the step-up to tabletop. (A huge gap that any mere mortal wouldn't even dream of.) So he goes for it, and he made it! But because of the wind-factor, his landing wasn't so smooth, and his right foot unclipped and slammed the ground ... soon followed by a "snapping" sound that few could hear. Upon getting it X-rayed, a Canadian Doctor declared, "It's broke, eh." And they put on a quick cast, that wouldn't last. BMX SuperCamp in Nanaimo is always a blast--so there was tons o' fun for everyone to do. And Kamakazi wasn't about to let a broken ankle ruin his week. The next day, he was back on his bike, manualling the rhythm section, and the following day, he was hitting the wake on a lake, innertub'ing behind a boat (with his cast wrapped in plastic). And if the employees at BungeeZone would've let him, he would've been jumping off a 150 foot bridge with the rest of the BMXers. Needless to say, 'Kazi's cast was looking a bit worn by Saturday. The good news was that the injury hadn't slowed him down much. The bad news was that he'd made the break a little bit worse by not taking it easy. The Canadian Doctor was just shaking his head in amazement. And this time, put on a heavy duty dirt-jumping-type fiberglass version of a cast. Randy Little and the Nanaimo Crew took real good care of Kamakazi, awarding him a custom pair of flat-black Redline crutches (with Redline pads 'n all). And his Redline cohort-Bubba Harris, gave his cast the Full Factory Redline look. . ONE WEEK LATER: Bored, with nothing to do this past Sunday, Kamakazi found some clippers in gOrk's garage and decided to remove his custom Redline cast. On Monday, he returned to the hospital to have it checked out again, and have a new cast put on. X-rays showed that it's healing fine and they put him in a soft cast for his long airplane ride home. brand new REDLINE co-sponsor: MATTEL DM-2 MIXER So. Cal. REDLINE has just added a new late-in-the-year CoSponsor; the DM2 (Digital Music Mixer) by APZU. The promotional program is being handled by the REGAN GROUP, who will be demonstrating the DM2 in the Redline Pits - at select REDLINE CUP FINALS, as well as the ABA Fallnationals. That's right--the Redline Rig will be turning in to a BMX rave of sorts; so you'll definitely want to check it out! The DM2 mixer will be hitting the market in September, just in time for the Holiday shopping season. It hooks right up to your personal computer, and enables the user to mix music just like Moby or Crystal Method.... (well, maybe with a whole lotta practice). Be sure to stop by the RL pits in Oklahoma, Las Vegas or Del Mar and give the DM2 mixer a try. No longer will you need 2 turntables and a microphone... just a computer and your DM2. The DM2 will sell in all major stores for right around $100. You might even want to add it to your Christmas list! For more on the DM2, go to: www.mydm2.com Redline's CLARENCE PERRY to clip-in? Everett, WA. Rumor has it that "THE EARTHQUAKE" is making some adjustments. After getting snapped out of the gate by (of ALL people) gOrk [who had just bolted on some clipless pedals that morning] at a local Saturday morning single-pointer, CLARENCE PERRY saw the light and might be converting to clipless. He stopped by the offices Monday to grab a pair of SHIMANO M-646's. If that wasn't enough of a change -- Earthquake might also put a 1.75 tire on his front wheel (eeeeek, gasp!!). The Northwestern Legend has got to be one of the last BMXers on earth who still uses a 2.125 Comp-III tire up front and platform pedals. As if Clarence wasn't fast enough on his Redline before -- just imagine how quick he'll be with all these changes! VOICE, VOTE & VIEW results new question: final results: ...to let your "VOICE" be heard -- click on the V,V&V icon on the Redline website. Read the survey question, VOTE and then VIEW the results. REDLINE CUP FINALS locations finalized Gilbert, Arizona. The ABA has finally announced the location of the REDLINE CUP WEST; it'll be held in PRIMM, at the indoor PRIMM ARENA & CASINO. This is great news--as 'Vegas is always hotter than, well... you know what, at that time of the year. The Western Redline Cup Finals will be near the stateline - 30 minutes or so from Las Vegas, NV. Previously, the NBL has held nationals at Primm, and everyone reported that it's an excellent indoor facility (with plenty of "things" for the parents to do, as well as tons of fun for the under-21 kids - including rollar coasters and a big outdoor theme park). Racing will take place from Friday thru Sunday, while the annual Interbike tradeshow begins Sunday and goes 'til Wednesday. This will be a great opportunity for early-arriving Bike Dealers to see some of the country's best BMX action! It's almost enough for LasVegas to declare that week "National Bike Week" in Nevada! 64 QUALIFIERS DONE - IT'S FINALS TIME: If you haven't qualified to be invited to the Redline Cup Finals; you're now too late. All 64 regional REDLINE CUP QUALIFIERS have been ran, and the "invitees" have been decided. If you made your main event at any RLC Qualifier, the ABA will be sending you an invitation to race in one of the three REDLINE CUP FINALS. Depending on where you live--you'll get to attend the East, Central or West Finals. Locations for the REDLINE CUP FINALS are: REDLINE CUP FINALS EAST.....Sept.14-16......Bensalem, Pennsylvania - Bensalem BMX (outdoor) REDLINE CUP FINALS CENTRAL..Sept.21-23......Gutherie, Oklahoma - Lazy-E (Indoor) Arena REDLINE CUP FINALS WEST....Sept.28-30......Las Vegas, Nevada - Primm Arena/Casino (Indoor) By winning the main event at one of these REDLINE CUP Finals, the winner receives a REDLINE CUP NO.1 plate (made by Tangent and to be run throughout the next 12 months), a big ol' 1st place trophy, and gets his picture taken - to be printed with the results in BMXer magazine. The distinct yellow-background No.1 plates are awarded to every class, in every age and division. Redline/Australia's 6-time World Champ: MELISSA MANKOWSKI Australia. July of 2001 was a busy month for Melissa Mankowski. The 13 year old Australian girl continued her dmonance at the UCI Worlds in Louisville, and didn't stop there. Here's Melissa's report on what she's been up to: "World Championships Kentucky USA- 1ST 13 girls The weekend that we arrived home I raced at Gladstone 2 day and got 3rd in A Ladies pretty ordinary, I think I was jet lagged. >From then I have been in 2 local papers, 1 Sydney paper and I have been interviewed for junior sport star award on channel 7 Mackay. I have been on fox sport _ which I did last year at Tamworth and it has just been aired on pay T.V. this was a 1 hour TV show. Australia BMX was contacted about someone doing a documentary on _wheels in motion_ --and guess who they picked? Yeah, me! ABC Australia want to do a 1-hour documentary on me which means they will follow me around a race meet and tape everything I do from preparing for my race to racing. I have also appeared in a Chicago Newspaper with Rafal the only Polish competitor at the Worlds. July was hectic! Thank goodness it_s August." ILLINOIS STATE CHAMPIONS on REDLINE's JUSTIN HERBERT, riding on our Spin Doctors/Redline co-spo team became the 6 year old ILLINOIS STATE CHAMP, along with plenty of other Redliners on the Fox-River squad. KATIE SHEDIVY sent us a full report on the State Champ Finals at Rockford: "I won both my class annd cruiser state championships again in Rockford yesterday. Johnny Cady and Derik Leary also left with championships. I got bumped up and had to race Jody England in 14-15 Girl Cruiser in the make-up race from Saturday's rain out. Jody beat me by about three inches...I think. It was one of my best races. I'm starting to jump now!" "First day of school today. So, guess who already has homework?" --Kwik Katie Shedivy Thanks for the update, Katie... now get back to the books! UP NEXT: WHAT'S NEXT: JASON CARNES has been happily relaxing (and training) back in texas, with 3 weeks off. He fires up the Redline Rig this week and will head for Louisville, Kentucky for the NBL GRANDS. He'll be joined at the last race of NBL's 2001 season by KIM HAYASHI, who pretty much has her repeat of a No.1 Title wrapped up. Right after Oregon's GNW National, MATT HADAN went in for hernia surgery, and is recup'ing at home. He's hoping to be ready to race this weekend--if so; he'll be heading to Reno for the BLACK JACK NATIONALS. School also started this week for BUBBA HARRIS as he returned home after being on the road pretty much non-stop for 3 months. He too, will be in Reno for the Black Jack's. After doing the "couch tour" for 10 days, Aussie pro "KAMAKAZI" hobbles on a plane to Louisville, where he will be forced to sit on the sidelines and watch the NBL No.1 Pro title come down to the wire. After it's over, he'll board a plane bound for down unda', loaded with a 2002 Proline and Titanium frame to test out. For those who have already become Kamakazi fans; don't worry.... in the infamous words of Arnold, he's told us: "I'll be back." REDLINE's team sponsors are: ALEX rims, KOOL STOP brakeshoes, TIOGA components, ATI grips, SHIMANO parts, KORE seatposts, PRYME clothing, NINTENDO POWER magazine, LIZARDSKINS products, FLICK TRIX finger bikes, and DM2 mixer. .
