VANS CHAMPIONSHIPS OF BMX TEAR UP OCEANSIDE
Mirra Takes First in Vert and Bowl, and Wins Overall Street Title

Oceanside, CA (October 7, 2001) Oceanside, CA geared up as the best BMX riders in the world pedaled into town for the Vans Championships of BMX. The event, the third and final stop of the Vans Triple Crown of BMX, featured world class action from a dazzling field of competitors. Ryan Nyquist got down and dirty to take first place in the Dirt competition, and Dave Mirra earned top honors in both Bowl and Vert. Dennis McCoy pulled out an amazing run to beat out Colin MacKay and Mirra and grab first place in the Street competition. The event closed out the Vans Triple Crown Series for the year, and $10,000 was awarded to Nyquist who amassed the most points throughout the three Vans Triple Crown Series events as he swept the Dirt category this year, taking first place in all three Vans Triple Crown Events. "Miracle Boy" Dave Mirra scored a "two-fer,"winning the Best Overall title in both Vert and Street. The event will be broadcast on Fox Sports Net on Sunday, December 30 at 1:00 p.m. regionally as part of Fox's ongoing coverage of the Vans Triple Crown Series.

With beautiful weather showcasing a huge venue dominating the Oceanside Pier, thousands of fans turned out to catch the best BMX has to offer. In the Bowl category, Dave Mirra reigned supreme, stealing first place from Dennis McCoy, who finished a close second. Mirra likewise took first in the Vert competition, beating out John Parker and McCoy, who finished second and third, respectively. But McCoy put together a run on the street course that even Mirra's double back flip could not touch and secured a first place win. Mirra finished third, and Colin MacKay took second place honors. Mirra's scores were nonetheless enough to earn him the Best Overall title for Street and $10,000. He also took top honors as the Best Overall Vert champion and an additional $10,000. Nyquist 's flawless Triple Crown performance earned him the Best Overall Dirt award.
